Funny Names We Got As Kids - That Stuck To Us For The Rest Of Our Days

By: Insight - Article Submitted on: 2008-08-08

Ever have a name or a label pasted on you as a kid, that winds up sticking too you for the rest of your natural born days? Why is it that some surnames we pick up as kids, sometimes wind up sticking and holding on to us seemingly, to the end of time.

For example, as a youngster, I had unusually big feet for a kid my age. At home, I would sometime leave my shoes in the middle of the living room floor where my father would sometimes trip over them. When he did, he would joking say to me at times "boy why don't you take those boats down to the rivers edge and float them in the water. When playing baseball with the guys, I would often trip over my own feet while chasing a flying baseball out to center field. So, the guys started calling me "foots." And the name just stuck. It all started out jokingly, you know, just something the guys would say to get a laugh out of one of the other fellows.

Yet, strangely, over time, the use of the name somehow stuck to me and became common place, no laugh intended no laugh taken. I don't know how or exactly why, but this new term became my surname and more and more of the folks started to call and refer to me using this new name. And, even stranger still, I began to respond to this new name when the folks would call out to me using the name. And for the life of me I tell Ya, the name has followed me down the corridor of the years of time and is still with me down to this very day. So, now when all the friends who knew me while growing up call out to me using the name, I respond just as if the name had been the one given me at birth.

All of which got me to thinking about names and genealogical history of names in general. For example I asked myself where do names come from in the first place. What is so unique about names that cause people go to such great lengths to identify the perfect name. For example, when a baby is born into the family. Is there a specific method we can use to research, identify, and capture the perfect name for this new-born just now arriving into the world. Really just what's in a name that makes it so special. Do the names we've been given have meaning or a bearing on the life course or direction hoped for us to take in the future? Huh, gotta think some more on that one and try and see if I can come up with some answer to that end. Maybe something for a future article I might publish.

Until than appreciate the name you've been given, and enjoy your life.
